The Bauchi state command of Hisbah (Shariah police) said it has during an operation last week, confiscated about 400 crates of assorted brands of bear in the state.
The state Commander of Hisbah group, Ibrahim Musa Yisin made this known in an interview with our correspondent in Bauchi on Thursday.
According to him, the different varieties of the alcoholic brands, including hot drinks were seized from various points within the state capital.
He said 63 cartons of assorted bear were seized in mechanical village along Jos road, 58 in Maiduguri bye-pass, 118 at a warehouse in Bayan Gari, 30 in New GRA, 77 in Dass park while 19 of the cartons were seized in Salama.
The Hisbah commander said, “the responsibility of the Shariah commission of which we fall under, is to ensure that good moral behavior is instill amongst the people in the state.
He said that their operation was put to halt five years ago due to non logistic support, coupled with shortage of manpower, adding that the commission has small number of Hisbah personnel.
“We are aware of bear selling points in some parts of the state, it is prevailing but as a government agency unless you have the opportunity to tackle it at a point, it is not going to be possible,” he said.
“But this year, with this government on seat, we have been able to go round and see, we have discovered that even by the road side you can see alcohol been sold, almost everywhere has been turned to a bar but we have started confiscating some, about 400 crates, they are outside there”, the commander said.
Yisin who said that the Shariah commission in the state will not relent in its efforts to ensure good morality amongst the people, noted that no religion among the major two in Bauchi that permits moral decadence.
