Following the embarrassing fight between the Minister of State for Labour and Employment Festus Keyamo and members of the Senate Committee on Employment, the National Assembly has suspended the 774,000 job programme being handled by Keyamo.
President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the scheme to provide employment for 774,000 Nigerians under the Special Public Works programme placed in the care of the National Directorate of Employment to cushion the effect of COVID-19 pandemic.
The spokesperson for the Senate, Ajibola Basiru who agreed that the suspension was made due to the ‘fight’ between Keyamo and some lawmakers, said the Minister in charge of the Ministry has been invited to make some explanations on the matter.
“In view of the foregoing, the implementation of the programme shall be on hold pending proper briefing of the National Assembly by the Minister of Labour and Productivity,” he said.
The programme was designed to provide 1,000 jobs in each of the 774 local governments in Nigeria with a monthly allowance of N20,000
