The threat by Shoprite Holdings Limited to fold its businesses and leave Nigeria has sent shockwaves to its numerous workers across Nigeria.

The South African company is the employer of thousands of Nigerians in its hundreds of shops across the country.

Shoprite hinted it may soon leave Nigeria in its “Operational and Voluntary Trading Update” released on Monday. The company said the decision was due to the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, an announcement that has generated serious debate on social media with many saying the company was just blackmailing authorities in order to get tax cuts and other incentives.

Other Nigerians however argued that the business environment in the country is becoming more hostile with too much taxes as well as poor electricity supply as some of the factors stifling businesses.
