…Deadline extended to May

After many years of the exercise, only 51 million Nigerians have been registered for the National Identification Number (NIN).

The United Nations estimates the 2021 Nigeria population to be 211 million. The NIN registration exercise has been on for over 10 years.

The NIN number is now required for major activities in Nigeria  including getting an international passport, a driver’s license and registering for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations, among many others.

The figure was announced in a joint press statement by the spokespersons of the Nigerian Communications Commission and the National Identity Management Commission.

They said that government has extended the deadline for residents to link their SIM cards to their NIN. The deadline was extended to May 6.
