Indications have emerged that mass protests may be staged in Anambra and Abuja simultaneously, over the attack on the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof. Chukwuma Soludo as well as to press for the release of Engr. Emeka Ezenwanne, the state commissioner for Public Utilities who was abducted during the attack.
But the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has told this newspaper exclusively, that the government is doing a lot to rescue the Public Utilities Commissioner, adding however that such efforts are not yet for public consumption.
Soludo was attacked Wednesday evening while addressing a youth stakeholders’ meeting at the Civic Centre in his hometown of Isuofia. He is a frontline contender for the November Anambra State governorship election under the banner of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA),
The gunmen were said to have stormed the venue in three tainted Sienna cars, killed three Police officers attached to the former CBN boss and abducted the state commissioner for public utilities, Engr. Emeka Ezenwanne who is still in their captivity, as at the time of filing this report.
According to sources who spoke to African Community News in confidentiality, many communities in Anambra state are mobilizing quietly to embark on mass protests, first, to among other things, condemn the attack on an illustrious son of the state and former CBN Governor; to demand government’s immediate rescue of the state commissioner for Public Utilities, Engr. Emeka Ezenwanne and to forestall the occurrence of another of such ugly assault on any other politician in the state.
One of our sources told African Community News that the protests are being planned to take place in Awka, the Anambra State capital, the commercial city of Ontisha, Enugu, Aba in Abia State, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital and Port Harcourt in Rivers state.
“Many communities are mobilizing for the protests. I can tell you that it would be massive and spontaneous. “We will protest in Awka, Abuja, Onitsha, Port Harcourt, Lagos, Enugu, Aba and many other cities
“The aim of the protest is to achieve the following: Condemn the attack on our illustrious son and no less, the former CBN Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo; Demand government’s immediate rescue of the state commissioner for Public Utilities, Engr. Emeka Ezenwanne and to forestall the occurrence of another of such ugly assault on any other politician in the state,” our source asked not to be named state.
According to him, the introduction of violent assault, killing of Policemen and abduction of persons in Anambra politics, is a dangerous development that should not be allowed to fetter.
“Anambra is known for peaceful elections, in spite of the many billionaires that usually contest political positions in the state. To suddenly introduce violence in Anambra politics is very dangerous and would not be condoled. That is why we are planning the protest,” he said, adding that the marches would commence after the Easter holidays.
But responding to our question on what his administration is doing to rescue Emeka Ezenwanne, his commissioner for Public Utilities, Governor Willie Obiano told African Community News that a lot is being done.
The Governor who spoke to us this Saturday morning, April 3, 2021, through the state commissioner for Information, C. Don Adinuba, said it is not right to disclose to the public, what the government at this stage.
“The government is doing a lot to ensure that the commissioner is rescued. Nobody in Anambra government is sleeping, including the Governor. I have been awake all night.
“But it is not in anybody’s interest for us to disclose what government is doing for now,” Adinuba said.
