The Anambra state Police Command has issued preliminary report over Wednesday evening’s attack on former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, by yet to be identified gunmen.
Soludo, a frontline aspirant for the November governorship election in the state, under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), was attacked in his hometown, Isuofia, while interacting with youths from the community at the Civic Centre.
During the attack, three police officers were killed by the gunmen, who also abducted the state’s commissioner for Public Utilities, Engr. Emeka Ezenwanne.
Our sources who were in attendance when the incident happened, said that the gunmen, numbering about 15, stormed the venue of Soludo’s meeting with the youths, on three tinted Sienna cars and shot sporadically for three minutes before entering the hall.
One of our sources said, the policemen on duty fought gallantly by responding to the shootings, adding however that “Bullets were not penetrating the bodies of the gunmen,” and in the process, three policemen were gunned down.
In the preliminary report issued today, Thursday, by the Anambra Police Command and sent to African Community News (ACN), the Police confirmed the incident, the killing of three personnel and abduction of the Commissioner, Engr. Emeka Ezenwanne.
The bulletin with the title, “Isuofia Civic Centre Incident: CP Kuryas leads Police for On-the Spot Assessment,” was signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu Anipr.
The statement said- “The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, *CP Monday Bala Kuryas fsi*, in the evening hours of, 31st March, 2021, led a crack team of Police Operatives for on-the-spot assessment to the venue of a stakeholders/ community meeting at Isuofia Civic Centre in Aguata LGA, which came under attack same date at about 1730hrs, by a yet to be identified armed hoodlums.
“The assailants were resisted by security Operatives present at the event and in the ensuing gun duel, three (3) Police Operatives sustained severe gunshots injuries and were later confirmed dead in the hospital, while their corpses have been deposited in the mortuary.
“Following the incidence, the attackers abducted one *Engr. Emeka Ezenwanne, Commissioner of Public Utilities.* Meanwhile, one (1) person has been arrested in connection with the act.
“The Police Operatives led by the Command CP, visited the scene and also visited the Former CBN Governor to reinforce the security in his house and the Community entirely.
“In his response he thanked the Commissioner and his team for the quick response.
“To this end, the CP while condemning the act, commiserate with the family and friends of the Officers who paid the supreme Price, has ordered the immediate launch of a tacit investigation to unravel the mystery behind the incidence as well as bring perpetrators of the barbaric act to book.
“He also called on the good people of *Ndi Anambra* to join hands in the fight against Crime and Criminality,” the bulletin concluded.
