Over 1,500 inmates of Owerri prison were freed when gunmen attacked the facility early Monday morning.
African Community News broke the story early this morning, estimating that over 500 inmates were freed, as at that time.
However, our correspondent in Owerri has confirmed that over 1,500 prisoners were freed as the entire facility was set ablaze through bomb explosions.
The attackers also burnt the Imo State Police Command headquarters situated in Owerri and burnt almost all the vehicles parked at the command headquarters.
All suspects in all the cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command were also set free by the gunmen.
According to a video sent to us by our sources in Owerri, hundreds of people were seen in the early hours of today, on the streets of Owerri, begging for transport fare to go to their homes, saying they were just released by gunmen who attacked the Okigwe road prison and other facilities in Owerri
