On Saturday, June 26, 2021, the tenure of Matt Hancock, British health minister, came to an abrupt end after he tendered resignation letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, following mounting pressure over his relationship with his married female aide.
Hancock was caught kissing Ms. Coladangelo in his ministerial office which was seen as a breach of coronavirus restriction rules.
Video footage of the pair kissing had emerged with several newspapers splashing the story and photograph on their covers.
In addition to resigning from his job, the politician similarly walked out of his 15-year-marriagem telling his wife Martha, on Thursday that he was through with all.
Hancock in his resignation letter told Prime Minister Boris Johnson that government “owe it to people who have sacrificed so much in this pandemic to be honest.”
“Those of us who make these rules have got to stick by them”, he added.
In response, Boris said he was sorry to receive Hancock’s resignation letter, and told him- “You should be proud of what you’ve achieved”
Former chancellor and home secretary Sajid Javid was immediately announced as Hancock’s replacement.
According to a report earlier by the London Mail, friends of the pair said they had been seeing each other for around six weeks, but were a ‘love match’.
In a video announcing his resignation, Hancock said: “The last thing I would want is for my private life to distract attention from the single-minded focus that is leading us out of this crisis.
“I want to reiterate my apology for breaking the guidance, and apologise to my family and loved ones for putting them through this. I also need (to) be with my children at this time.”
