On February 10, 2013, Pope Benedict XVI issued the shocking statement declaration that he intended to resign from his post as head of the Catholic Church at the end of the month.

It was a unprecedented move as every Church head since Gregory XII in the early 15th century had fulfilled his papal duties until death.

Following Benedict’s exit, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected the new head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State. He chose the name, Pope Francis. He is the first pope to be a member of the Society of Jesus, the first from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere, and the first pope from outside Europe since Gregory III.

While Francis has been presiding over the affairs of the church with the largest number of faithful worldwide, Benedict has been living peacefully in a secluded party o the Vatican city without any fuse with the establishment- a positive example in leadership.
