Barely 24 hours before the election of new executive committee members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, some criminal elements, suspected to be supporters of opposing camps have been sending messages to the incumbent chairman of the Council, Comrade Emmanuel Ogbeche.
The election is scheduled to take place intomorrow, Saturday, at the NUJ, FCT secretariat, Utako, Abuja while the credentials night will take place by 4pm today.
Ogbeche is contesting for a second tenure of three years under a campaign umbrella christened Fresh Start Reloaded.
A statement Friday, signed by Jide Oyekunle, Secretary, Correspondents Chapel, FCT, NUJ, has it that- “It has come to the knowledge of the Chapel that the Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Emmanuel Ogbeche who is standing reelection for second term in the union’s election scheduled for Saturday December 4, 2021 has been receiving series of threat phone calls and messages from unknown persons.
“We demand that nothing untoward should happen to Comrade EMMANUEL OGBECHE.
“We want to use this medium to sound a note of warming to those behind such inanity to desist forthwith.”
Reacting to the statement, many journalists in the FCT have called on the Fresh Start Reloaded team to report the matter to the Police and other security agencies for investigation.
It would be recalled that Comrade Emmanuel Ogbeche who is completing his first tenure as NUJ FCT Chapter Chairman has become a household name among Journalists in Abuja due to what someembers have termed high level performance with many positive developments to his credit.
Among some of the high points of his achievements include running an inclusive, open door administration that has given all journalists in the FCT a sense of belonging.
Many journalists in the FCT who spoke to African Community News said they benefitted from the Covid-19 palliatives attracted to the council by Ogbeche’s administration which they say was a huge relief in 2020 when the pandemic was at its devastating peak.
Other have praised Ogbeche for the manner in which both covid-19 tests and vaccination was being attracted and being handled by the Ogbeche administration as well as Council’s intervention when journalists are attacked or in danger, granting of loans to members in financial difficulties as well as prudent management of resource, among other credits for which they believe his reelection would be a walkover.
