Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa, a former presidential Candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC), is dead.

A family source, who confirmed the death, said Tofa passed on in the early hours of Monday at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano after a brief illness.

Tofa was the major challenger to Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the controversial June 12, 1993 presidential election.

He contested under the banner of the National Republican Convention (NRC) while Abiola flew the flag of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
