Confusion has enveloped the Aso Rock Presidential Villa and the top hierarchy of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over the ambition of two national leaders of APC, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, both of who want to contest the president’s office in 2023.
According to reliable presidency sources, Tinubu over the weekend, formally informed President Muhammadu Buhari that he would be contesting for the office.
African Community News was also informed that while Osinbajo has been waiting for the right time to brief Tinubu of his ambition, the former Lagos State governor has also told the Vice President that he would contest for president.
It is a well known fact that Tinubu is Osinbajo’s godfather in politics. Tinubu appointed Osinbajo as Attorney General and commissioner for Justice in Lagos State while he was governor. It Tinubu also who nominated Osinbajo to be running mate to Buhari during the 2015 presidential election.
It has been revealed however, that Tinubu had wanted to be the running mate to Buhari in the 2015 election but Buhari had refused on grounds that it would not be fine to run on Muslim Muslim ticket. Tinubu had then given up and backed Osinbajo as Buhari’s running mate.
In the new twist, although Tinubu is known to be very wealthy with huge contacts across the six geopolitical zones of the country, running on a Muslim Muslim ticket has again become an issue as Tinubu may not find a strong Christian member of the APC to pick as running mate from the North.
